Genesis 17 -- God promises Abram descendants, again, finally, but only for a price

Now Abram is 99 years old! Still no legitimate children. Sarai is 90.

Once again, God promises Abram he will have legitimate descendants. Abram falls down onto the ground laughing.

Really!!! You will have descendants and I will give them Canaan forever and I will look after them. But only if you agree that you and all of your male descendants will be circumcised. No more foreskins. That's the rule. Oh, and by the way, from now on your name is Abraham.

Abraham immediately circumcised himself and all of his male slaves. Also, God redeems Abraham's illegitimate son in return for his circumcision. One year later, Sarai, now named Sarah, gave birth to their son, Isaac.
