Genesis 14 -- foreign policy
So, Canaan and adjoining areas were by no means empty. There were kings all over the place. They fought a lot of wars. During one of these wars a king happened to capture Lot and take all his stuff. Abram would not allow this. From his extensive slaveholdings, he raised his own army of 318 soldiers and freed Lot and got back his stuff. They also liberated some stuff belonging to other kings. Abram gave it all back to the rightful owners, not keeping any for himself, because he's such a swell guy. And because he wants nobody to have an excuse for saying Abram got rich unfairly. Well, except for swindling the Pharaoh by letting him sleep with Sarai, but that was before.
