Why do people so often sabotage their own happiness?

Why do people so often sabotage their own happiness?

One reason is because we've been taught by our elders that happiness is not an appropriate or sufficient goal. We're taught to use more abstract or communitarian reference points; we're taught that organizing our lives around personal happiness is selfish and sinful. This can become so deeply learned that when we discover we are on a path toward happiness, we reflexively change course.
